Family-centered Care From Certified Pelvic Floor Therapists

We take a personalized, family-oriented approach to pediatric pelvic floor therapy. You, your child, and our physical therapy team work together to improve symptoms and find solutions that work.

Our experienced pediatric therapists not only treat your child but also empower you as a parent or caregiver. You are encouraged to be present during treatments, ask questions, and learn techniques to help your child strengthen their pelvic floor at home, giving you confidence to support your child’s progress.

Improving Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Symptoms in Children

Weak or dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles can cause uncomfortable symptoms in children and make potty training difficult. Early intervention is beneficial for children to develop healthy, regular potty habits.

Our pediatric pelvic floor therapists help your child improve pelvic floor function. This specialized therapy can alleviate symptoms that affect their independence and self-esteem, including:

  • Bedwetting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Pelvic pain and discomfort
  • Urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Urinary urgency
  • UTIs
  • Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)

What to Expect During Your Child’s Pediatric Pelvic Floor Therapy Session

At your initial visit, one of our pelvic floor therapists performs a comprehensive assessment with you and your child. We observe their posture, strength, and pelvic floor function. We also discuss your child’s health history, symptoms, and prior pelvic floor treatments.

Next, we create a tailored treatment plan for your child. All treatments are age-appropriate and often include play so children are comfortable and at ease. Depending on their age and symptoms, treatments may include:

Pelvic floor exercises

Our skilled therapists teach your child how to contract and relax their pelvic floor muscles. An awareness of the pelvic floor helps your child strengthen and control the muscles. These exercises may also improve your child’s posture, body mechanics, and breathing.

Relaxation and lifestyle changes

Breathing techniques and other relaxation methods can help reduce tension in the pelvic floor. We teach you and your child how to relax tight pelvic floor muscles with intentional breaths. Your child’s physical therapist may also suggest dietary changes, as certain fluids and foods can contribute to bladder and bowel issues.

Manual techniques

We may use manual techniques with the child’s and caregiver’s consent. Hands-on pressure and massage can release tension in the pelvic muscles and surrounding joints. During manual treatments, a parent or caregiver must be in the room with the physical therapist and the child to ensure their comfort and safety.

At-home exercises

Home exercises between sessions are key to successful pediatric pelvic floor therapy. At-home work reinforces skills the child learned in sessions. It may help to do the exercises with your child as a fun activity. Your child’s physical therapist will recommend what type of exercises and their frequency.

Progress Assessments and Follow-up Care

We track your child’s progress with routine assessments and goal setting. Goals we may work toward include:

  • Bladder and bowel control
  • Healthy, routine toileting
  • Less pain and discomfort
  • Potty training

Children should continue their learned exercises at home to continue strengthening their pelvic floor. Our physical therapists provide you with resources and follow-up care to support your child’s ongoing pelvic health.
