LSVT BIG
Parkinson’s disease impacts motor function and makes movement challenging. LSVT BIG (Lee
Silverman Voice Treatment – BIG) therapy helps people with the disease improve their
movements. The specialized treatment, led by a certified LSVT BIG therapist, can make everyday
tasks easier for individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
How LSVT BIG Works
Parkinson’s disease causes movements to become smaller, weaker, and slower. LSVT BIG
encourages patients to exaggerate their movements. During the one-on-one sessions, our
therapists help patients learn to make their movements as big as possible so their small
movements become more regular.
When individuals apply the “big” movement concept to everyday tasks, research shows they
can improve their:
- Balance
- Independence
- Large motor skills
- Small motor skills
- Trunk rotation
- Muscle stiffness and soreness
- Walking
Who Can Benefit from LSVT BIG Therapy
LSVT BIG therapy can benefit individuals at any disease stage. However, patients benefit the
most when they are in the early or middle stages of the disease.
Consider starting Parkinson’s physical therapy upon diagnosis or when you notice significant
symptoms, which may include:
- Increased falls and loss of balance
- Muscle stiffness and soreness
- Slow, small, or weak movement
- Stooped posture
- Tremors
